The Mdewakanton and Wahpekute bands of Dakota sell most of their lands in the southern part of the state when the Treaty of Mendota is signed. Governor Alexander Ramsey and Luke Lea represent the United States, and Ta Oyate Duta (His Red Nation, also known as Little Crow), Wakan Ozanan (Medicine Bottle), Wakinyan Waste (Good Thunder), Shakopee (Six), and Wabasha (Red Leaf) sign for the Dakota. Other bands had sold their lands in the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux.
